And while some deformities may have minor benefits, the bad should always outweigh the good. So if you go by the chart, your fighter starts with some gold but no +1 swords, then has a non-insignificant chance of facing off against a CR appropriate challenge that needs a magic sword to hit, and then (if you follow the DMG's treasure rules) stands a good chance of coming across a +1 sword by the time he hits next level. Metis: Every metis character must have one deformity, chosen during character creation. That chart produces high level characters who don't have magic weapons for a "standard magic campaign", which is pretty unlikely if you take a look at the treasure hoard tables. The problem is that the DMG gives you precious little guidance on what an appropriate magic item level is for your campaign is outside the wealth-by-level chart. ![]() I also can't agree that there's not a meaningful difference between a fighter using mundane equipment and one decked out in +3 weapons and armor, but 5E does certainly claim that it doesn't make a difference. ![]() I think that after a certain point, fighters who don't have a +1 sword are going to be fairly disadvantaged because many high level threats still have "resistance to non-magical weapons" and you can't be sure the DM is just going to throw armies of orcs at you instead of demon lords. Well, "needs" is a strong term, certainly.
